ART Twins: Good News
Title:Perinatal and neonatal outcomes in multiple gestations: assisted reproduction vs spontaneous conception
Author: B. Fitzsimmons et al.

Summary: Testing the hypothesis that the outcome differs in multiple pregnancies from assisted reproduction compared to those resulting from spontaneous conception, this retrospective cohort study reviewed 72 cases (56 twin and 16 triplet). Matching was undertaken for parity, maternal age, fetal number and maternal medical conditions. Perinatal mortality was significantly higher for twins resulting from spontaneous conception (24 vs 2) This difference was not noted in triplets. Mean gestational age was lower for twins and triplets from resulting ART (9.4 vs 13.3 and 8.8 vs 15.8 respectively). The incidence of cerclage was significantly higher in the triplet /ART group. No other differences were noted. The authors concluded that perinatal mortality is lower in twins conceived through ART than through spontaneous conception. These differences may be the result of a higher frequency of monochorionic placentation in the spontaneously conceived group.
Comment: good news for art. I would underline that Art twins are fraternal which has less mortality than identical.
