Needle Aspiration of Ovarian Cysts: Is Cytologic Evaluation Useful?
Title:Comparison of Comparison of fine needle aspiration cytologic findings of ovarian cysts with ovarian histologic findings.

Summary: Needle aspiration is a relatively easy and attractive way to evaluate ovarian cysts but is it accurate? This study compared the fluid from intact ovarian cysts(cytologic findings) with the ovarian histologic findings. 105 ovaries from 98 women comprised the study material. Histology confirmed 89 benign ovarian tumors and 13 ovarian carcinomas. The sensitivity for ovarian fluid cytologic evaluation was 25% and specificity 90%. The false positive rate was 73% and false negative rate 12%. The author's concluded that fine needle aspiration of ovarian cysts with cytologic evaluation does not accurately predict ovarian histologic findings.
Comment: This confirms several other studies that indicate that aspiration is of limited benefit.
