Bed Rest After IVF
Title:Is a prolonged bed rest following embryo transfer useful

Summary: A study controlling for all variables except bed rest after embryo transfer was undertaken with the purpose of comparing 24 hr bed rest with a brief 20 minute rest after embryo transfer. 182 couples were randomly assigned to either a 24 hour rest group or a 20 minute rest group and then underwent IVF. The 24 hr group had a pregnancy per transfer rate of 24.1%(21 pregnancies), the 20 minute groups' rate was 23.6%(22 pregnancies). Spontaneous miscarriages occurred in 19% of the 24 hr group and 18.1% of the 20 minute group. The twin pregnancy rate was 14.2% in the 24 hr group and 13.6% in the 20 minute rest group. These outcome results demonstrated similarity with no statistically significant differences. The authors feel that 24 hour bed rest does not offer a better pregnancy outcome as implantation rates do not appear to be influenced by the length of bed rest after embryo transfer.
Comment : Some would consider this a simplistic study. I think we need more research into such practical problems. The question posed by virtually every patient after transfer is 'what can I do'? Who know's the answer? Our recommendations as professionals started out of part common sense and part fear and have continued out of superstition. A single study, presented in abstract, has addressed this problem previously and found no difference between a one and three hour wait after transfer. This study should be reassuring to everyone.
