Caffeine Not Linked to Infertility
Title:Caffeine consumption does not impair fertility
Author:B. Caan et al.
Address:Oakland California
Source:American Journal of Public Health 88:270-274 (March) 1998
Summary:In this prospective study with 187 women trying to conceive, consumption of coffee, tea and soda ( with and without caffeine) was measured along with an accounting of individual caffeine intakes. The mean caffeine intake was 610 mg/week (roughly 6 cups of coffee). The women were followed for 12 months or until pregnant. Odds ratios for becoming pregnant were not significantly different in high, modereate or low caffeine consumers. Coffee consumption and total caffeine consumption demonstrated a nonsignificant decrease in later cycles measured during the study.Interestingly, those who drank more than 1/2 cup of caffinated tea per day doubled their chances for conception per cycle. This was most evident in the first three cycles measured. Researchers postulate that this may have something to do with the chemical hypoxanthine found in tea, "Hypoxanthine may be the principle component of follicular fluid that contributes to the maturation and fertilzability of oocytes and polyphenolic compounds, which inhibit chromosomal abnormalities, thereby decreasing the number of nonviable embryos".
