Calcium supplementation reduces PMS symptoms
Title:Calcium carbonate and the premenstrual syndrome: effects on premenstrual and menstrual symptoms
Author:S.Thys-Jacobs et al.
Address: New York, New York
Summary: The effect of calcium carbonate on the luteal and menstrual phases of the menstrual cycle were evaluated in a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, multicenter clinical trial sponsored by SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare. 466 women aged 18-45 from 12 out patient centers were screened for moderate to severe cyclically recurring premenstrual symptoms. Individuals qualifying for the study were randomly assigned to receive 1200 mg elemental calcium each day, or a placebo for three menstrual cycles. Blood chemistry, complete blood count, and urinalysis were performed. Daily records were maintained of symptoms. By the third treatment cycle, calcium had effectively resulted in an overall 48% reduction in symptoms from the baseline scores. This compared to a 30% reduction of symptoms in the placebo group. The authors of this study concluded that calcium supplementation resulted in a major reduction in overall luteal phase symptoms and that calcium supplementation is a effective and simple treatment for those women suffering from premenstrual syndrome.
