Summary: Previous studies linking obesity and health care costs have used group level data for their analyses. This study looks at obesity as an independent risk factor for a variety of chronic diseases. It attempts to quantify an association between body mass index (BMI), health services and costs stratified by age and use source. The study identified 17,118 individuals through a health survey at an HMO. Data was obtained via records from hospital and associated databases for patient services. An association was found between BMI and annual rates of inpatient days, costs of out patient visits, costs of outpatient pharmacy and laboratory services, and total costs (P<0003). Members with BMIıs 30 to 34 had health care costs 25% higher than HMO members with a BMI of 20-24.9. Members with a BMI over 35 had health care costs 44 percent higher than those with a BMI of 20-24.9. The increased costs were explained as the association between BMI and chronic diseases such as: coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. With these findings in mind, the authors point to the potential for health care cost reduction through focused efforts in the area of weight reduction and weight gain prevention.
