Summary: The purpose of this crossover study protocol was to look at the acute effects of dietary glycemic index(GI) on energy metabolism and voluntary food intake in obese subjects. The subjects were 12 obese teenage males
who were evaluated on three separate visits. All subjects ate identical meals at breakfast and lunch. These two meals had a low, medium or high GI. After breakfast, hormonal and metabolic laboratory parameters were measured. Then, in the next 5 hours, voluntary food intake was tracked. The results showed that the high GI meals had a voluntary energy intake 53% greater than the low GI meal. The high GI meal was associated with higher insulin levels, lower glucagon levels, lower post absorbative plasma glucose and fatty acid levels, and a rise in epinenephrine. It was concluded that "the rapid absorbtion of glucose after consuming a high GI meal induces a series of hormonal and metabolic changes that promote excessive food intake in obese individuals." The authors added that more studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between dietary GI and long term weight regulation, glycemic index and obesity.
