Clomiphene & Mood
Loss of libido after pregnancy
Question: I have been
taking Clomid for 2 cycles now. I seem to get extremely irate
at little things and very temperamental. Is this a side effect
of the medicine?
Comment: Hot flashes,
headache, vision changes and mood changes are all relatively
common side effects of Clomid. It is difficult to say whether
this means the medication is more likely, or less likely,
to be effective. Some patients consider clomiphene (Clomid)
to be an absolute poison, while others never know they are
taking it. Overall, it is a safe medication with very rare
serious side effects. sst
Question: During my pregnancy,
my libido was hyperactive. Also, I had increased hirsutism
(something I suffer with normally.) After I delivered, my
hirsutism became much less noticeable (even less than pre-pregnancy);
however, I was left with absolutely no sex drive. I went to
my OB for help. He referred me to a sex therapist. My sex
therapist feels my problem is biologically based. My OB is
not cooperating and is not returning my phone calls or the
phone calls of the sex therapist. I'm planning on finding
another doctor, but I was wondering if I should call someone
else?
Comment: The most important
sex organ is between our ears, not legs. Having said this,
there are several endocrine reasons for lower sex drive including
increased prolactin and low androgen levels. If your sex therapist
believes it is biological, I would take this seriously. Post
partum depression is real and more common than many think.
Sometimes after prolonged infertility and then a successful
pregnancy , delivery is like the day after Christmas and there
is a let down. I am not sure which variety of physician may
be best for you. It may matter less about their specialty
qualification than their willingness to sort through the problem
with you. sst
