IVF Mix-Up
Title:Mother who gave birth to unrelated twins gives one up
Source: Chicago Tribune, March 31 1999
Summary:Two couples underwent embryo transfers in the Manhattan the practice. The One couple was successful and was informed of a twin pregnancy. The other couple, was unsuccessful in their IVF attempt. The IVF physician contacted the first couple during their pregnancy advising them that several other fertilized eggs may have been accidentally transferred along with her four eggs fertilized by her husband. The pregnant couple learned through DNA testing done on the unborn the babies, that one was not hers. Now, amidst lawsuits from both couples, the successful white couple is returning the black child to his biological parents, who are overjoyed. In a recent press release the couple stated, "we are giving him up because we love him." Most experts feel that there will be no lasting negative impact on the twins. In general the legal statutes are such that the speaking, the woman who gives birth to the child, remains the birth mother regardless of DNA.
Comment: This has resulted in demands for legislation requiring more laboratory regulation. It is very difficult to see how laws could prevent this error. There are relatively strict regulations involving all medical laboratories; mistakes continue. There are 2 areas that the government cannot control‹ the capacity for human error and ethics of a practitioner. This is a very sobering report and should be on the wall of every IVF laboratory. EVERY safeguard must to be employed, but safety has to start at home (lab).
