ligament

Summary: The uterosacral-cardinal ligament complex and the levator
plate is part of the support of the upper vagina, cervix and uterus . Uterine
prolapse has been associated with damage to these structures. This study
evaluates the steroid receptor status in the uterosacral ligament, the presence
of which may suggest a possible role for steroid hormones in pelvic support.
The uterosacral ligaments from 25 consecutive women undergoing hysterectomy
for non-malignant conditions were sampled. Using commercially available
monoclonal antibodies, estrogen and progesterone receptors were detected
in the nuclei of smooth muscle cells of the uterosacral ligament in all
patients. This finding was present regardless of variations in age, race,
menopausal status, parity, body mass index, and medications affecting serum
steroid hormone levels. Estrogen and progesterone receptors were not present
in the collagen, vascular, or neuronal components. This finding raises the
possibility of estrogen replacement as a preventive as well as a therapeutic
modality in the treatment of uterine prolapse.
Comment: As one would anticipate, but interesting nevertheless.
