Smoking Negatively Effects GIFT Pregnancy Rates
Title: Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer: Does smoking play a role?
Author: P.K. Chung
Address: Tampa FL, USA
Source: The Journal of Reproductive Medicine 42:65-70, 1997 (February)
Summary: A retrospective chart review 98 patients revealed 33.3%
live birth rate in 66 smokers compared to 10.5% in active smokers. Other
measurements such as amount of medications used, age, follicle size, number
of eggs were not different. There was a decrease in pregnancy rate in those
exposed to passive smoke (23%), but this was not a statistically significant
difference. Nicotine is known to alter tubal function. Studies in IVF patients
have shown similar results.
Comment: If for no other reason than the cost of assisted reproduction
alone, smoking should be stopped several months before assisted reproduction
attempts. There are also studies that have linked smoking with altered sperm
function. It would seem that these results could be extended to fertility
patients in general.
