Title:Psychological consequences of having triplets: a 4-year
followup study

Summary:In this prospective followup study, the mental health of
11 mothers of triplets and the quality of the relationship with their triplets
was made in the home by a psychologist, using semistructured tape recorded
interviews. All except one of these mothers had conceived after infertiltity
treatment. The evaluation of the mothers emotional well being and level
of depression was measured by the CES-D Scale (Center for Epidemiologic
Studies- Depression Scale). The quality of the relationship with the triplets
was based on the motherÕs opinion. Emotional distress and fatigue
(stress related mainly) was reported by all of the motherÕs. A high
score of depression and treatment with psychotropic drugs occurred in 4
of these motherÕs. Difficulties in the relationship seemed to be
due to inabiltiy to cope with the aggressive behavior and conflict between
the siblings. Difficulty in the relationships had not decreased over the
last 2 years, since the time of the last evaluation. Four of the motherÕs
expressed regrets about having triplets. The authors recommend that coupleÕs
undergoing infertility treatment should receive adequate information about
the long term psychological cost of triplet birth and that infertility treatments
be adapted in order to decrease the risk of triplet pregnancy.
Comment:In one way, what else would be expected with three 4 year
olds at home. On the other hand, a triplet pregnancy is a high risk pregnancy
regardless of the other associated factors of bearing multiple offspring.
