HRT treats depression
Title:Estrogen replacement in perimenopause-related depression: A preliminary report
Author: P. Schmidt, et al.
Address: Bethesda, Maryland
Source: American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 183:414-420 (August) 2000
Summary: Researchers examined the effectiveness of estrogen in treating depression in perimenopausal women with and without hot flushes. Subjects consisted of 34 females, 16 who received estradiol for six weeks and 18 who received a placebo for three weeks and then estradiol for three weeks. After three weeks of estradiol, standardized mood rating scale scores and visual analog scale symptom scores (sadness, anhedonia, social isolation) were significantly decreased in comparison to the baseline scores and they were also significantly lower than scores in women receiving the placebo. Neither the presence of hot flushes not the length of treatment influenced outcome. 80% of the women receiving estradiol and 22% of those receiving the placebo showed a full or partial therapeutic response. Researchers concluded that estradiol replacement effectively treats perimenopausal depression independent of its beneficial effects on vasomotor symptoms.
Comment: Some argue that depression is no more likely in perimenopause that at any other time in the life cycle. There are certainly many stresses at this time, but at which time in one's life are there not. Above results are encouraging and the study well-designed, but the numbers are small.
