Title:American heart association dietary recommendations dish out a more individualized approach
Author: AHA News Release
Address: New York
Date: October 5, 2000
Summary: The AHA unveiled new dietary guidelines, which have been
expanded to include specific recommendations tailored to an individualıs risk of
heart disease and stroke. The guidelines stress the importance of preventing
obesity and are easier to use because they stress overall eating patterns, rather
than a percentage of dietary fat or other nutrients. It is recommended that
people still need to limit saturated fats and cholesterol, but if they follow the
new guidelines, they will be consuming a balanced diet rich n nutrients, and may
not need to calculate percentages of specific dietary components. The basis of
the recommended diet is still one rich in fruits, vegetables, legume, whole
grains, low-fat dairy products, fish, lean meats an poultry. However, now two
weekly servings of fatty fish, such as tuna or salmon, are recommended. The
guidelines also take into account high protein and other popular diet strategies
and note areas of study that need greater emphasis. For example, there is little
scientific evidence to support the concepts that high protein diets result in
significant changes in metabolism, sustained weight loss or improved health.
Comment: I believe that the slow calorie ³low carb² diets are really
just calorie restricters. The calories to go are usually carbs. Good diets do
limit carbs. Dieting itself can be detrimental and add more stress to the brain
reproductive axis. The goal is good nutrition.
