Breastfeeding reduces childhood obesity

Summary:In the first study researchers studied data on infant feeding and child 0ver-weight status. Subjects were 2685 US born children between 3 and 5 years. Children who were ever breastfed were less likely to be at risk of overweight than those who were never breastfed. However, no effect of breastfeeding was seen on risk of being overweight. No clear dose-dependent effect was observed for duration of full breastfeeding, not motheršs concurrent weight. Risk of overweight nearly tripled with maternal overweight and more than quadrupled with maternal obesity. In the second report, researchers surveyed 8186 girls and 7155 boys age 9-14 years. Mothers were also surveyed. Compared with children who had been only or mostly fed formula, those who had been fed only or mostly breast milk were at reduced risk of overweight. Risk was also reduced among those who had been breastfed for >7 months as compared with those who had been breastfed for <3 months.
Comment: To start with breastfeeding is a very good way to loose the extra pounds of pregnancy. It's an easy formula --weight loss occurs when there more calories out than in. Besides being a rewarding exercise the caloric expenditure of full feeding equals or exceeds that of the most strenuous exercise. There now seems to be an additional benefit to the child. It is possible that these studies were biased by social or environmental differences, not just the act of breastfeeding. It is unclear whether women with PCOS have more difficulty with milk production and the desire may be there, but not the capacity. Still another bit of information that "breast is best."
