Summary: Because some men may have difficulties in producing spermatozoa on demand during treatments with assisted reproductive technologies (ART), the researchers describe the use of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) for temporary erectile dysfunction. Four men with temporary erectile dysfunction during IVF treatments were identified. After treatment with Viagra, 3 of the 4 men were able to produce a sperm sample with no difficulty. The fourth man felt such relief because of this potential solution, he succeeded in providing a sample without having to take the drug. If no contraindications exist, Viagra for temporary erectile dysfunction during ART seems to be a simple and cost-effective method of assisting men to produce spermatozoa on demand, and has been shown not to affect sperm count of healthy donors. This will save the need for surgical procedures in most cases. The researchers suggest the use of Viagra after failed trials >1 hour to produce spermatozoa, or planning the use of Viagra in advance for men with such a history.
