Summary:
In 1998 the Endometriosis Association conducted a survey of 4,000 women in the
United States and Canada who had endometriosis. Survey questions included age at onset of symptoms, type
of symptoms, and time elapsed from onset of symptoms to diagnosis. What were the most commonly reported
symptoms?
The most commonly reported symptom of endometriosis was pain at the time of
menstruation (95%),followed by fatigue/exhaustion (87%), diarrhea/painful bowel movements at the
time of menstruation (85%), abdominal bloating (84%), and heavy bleeding (65%).
Other symptoms included dyspareunia (64%), nausea or upset stomach at time of
menstruation (64%), irregular bleeding (44%), and infertility (43%).
According to the survey, patients waited an average of 4.67 years after initial
onset of symptoms before consulting a physician. An additional average of 4.61 years passed before a
physician diagnosed and confirmed endometriosis.
