Obesity and dollars (2)
Title: Lifetime health and economic benefits of weight loss among obese persons
Author: G. Oster, et al.
Address: Boston, MA
Source: American Journal of Public Health 89: 1536-1542 (October) 1999
Summary: Using the same dynamic modeling as they used in the above study, researchers studied the lifetime health and economic benefits of a sustained moderate weight loss among obese individuals. They discovered that a sustained 10% reduction in body weight (depending on age, gender, and initial BMI) would: 1) Reduce the expected number of years individuals would live with hypertension by 1.2 to 2.9, hypercholesterolemia by 0.3 to 0.8, and type 2 diabetes by 0.5 to 1.7. 2) Reduce the expected lifetime occurrence of CHD by 12 to 38 cases per 1,000 and stroke by 1 to 13 cases per 1,000. 3) Increase life expectancy by 2 to 7 months. 4) Reduce predicted lifetime medical care costs for the 5 diseases studied by $2,200 to $5,300.
Comment: In the United States in 1960, 15% of the female population was considered overweight. In 1990, the prevalence of obesity had risen to 25%. Obesity has become a major world epidemic, in part a response to today's sedentary lifestyle and dietary indiscretions.
